DANCE ON THE SURFACE OF BEING

We change. We grow. We learn and we forget. In the relentless cadence of time, something endures - a presence that we unmistakably recognize as the self. Fibers of spirit and matter twist into a singular axis of existence. It begins in the body. In that of another. In that of a woman.

From this intimate grounding we encounter the world. The earliest image of it - and of ourselves - is stripped of all veils, all garments, all masks. It is the nude. Naturally and unavoidably, this is the opening chapter of life and knowledge. With age and under the weight of societal norms, we become masters in concealing it. The body - particularly the nude and, even more so, the female one - rests beneath a rich canopy of interpretations.

In civilizations past and present, it has continued to oscillate from vulnerability to power, from grace to burden, from pride to censure. Perception shapes morality and agency, roles and status, lending measure to the good we can each do in the world.

In this context, the current exhibition, "Dance on the Surface of Being", invites you to contemplate the woman and her attributes with sincerity. In doing so, it offers a clear mirror reflecting who we are, revealing the architecture of the mind beneath the skin, speaking of unbreakable links and the force of defiant beauty before prejudice.
Our pursuit at WIN Gallery is constantly centered on dialogue - interior, with peers and across cultures. For the second year, we celebrate femininity and equal opportunity, understood as uncompromising fairness toward competence and grace, whomever they may come from.
Under the curatorial vision of Ms. Marinela Mantescu - Isac, a distinguished group of thirty-five contemporary artists, from Romania and Slovenia illustrate the subject by means of painting, sculpture, textile and mixed technique. Each medium complements the others, conveying layered structuring and a robust philosophical approach.
Art, business and friendships are all avenues of great promise, if well walked. Equilibrium between domains and throughout the surface of being holds the potential not only for a decent life but for a truly enchanting one. Especially in moments when dreaming feels inconceivable, the courage to do so makes possibility blossom.

Marcel Lupșe oscillates between broad naturalism - which can reach metaphysical and hallucinatory realism - and an idealistic conception of pictorial language as pure creation.

Alongside thyme and savory, basil and sage that Marcel Lupşe now envisions, emblematically, clearly, to the point of volumetric illusionism, such connotations, emerging from the stratifications of history, actively amplify the painter's Offering, and awaken, in relation to it, exciting keys to interpretation.

Painting thus becomes knowledge offered to the eye, teaching us their forms and virtues of orientation, emotion, energy, as well as the virtues of encountering these forms. In this type of painting, meaning and abstraction are mutually conditioned.

The garden recreates, through its splendor, the primordial mythical narrative, that which belongs to paradise. It is populated by deep thickets, subtle forms of opacity, or symbolic foreshortening, echoing, in allegorical tone, the tragic timbre of the Germanic medieval image (Altdorfer and the Danube School).

Insofar as artists can be defined according to their particular sensitivity to one of the realms, Lupșe is undoubtedly a painter of the plant world. In his works, regardless of when they were created and the nature of their themes, one constant presence is his obsession with texture and its infinite nuances.

As I have said on other occasions, Marcel Lupșe belongs to a synthetic trend that is just emerging in our young art and which attempts to reconcile an ethical, abstractly superior attitude with a plastic methodology designed to reconcile the "slag" of the avant-garde with the noble patina of the museum. The function of the image is profoundly civilizing: removed from the context of hunting, the gesture captures the peaceful drama of the annual cycle of plant growth.

And if we accept that painting is a field of meditation, of feeling, we must also accept that the painter is a seeker of traces.

Out of the potentiation for open dialogue between the traditional and the contemporary, the renewed symbolism of plant geometry has risen onto Marcel Lupșe's folk tapestry, gates, shawls, ashtrays and tables. With careful proportioning, with pure geometric essentialisation and suspended tondos, the artist focuses on contextualisation, on the frames from which the artistic message descends.

An artist with an equal vocation for monumental construction and careful observation of small spaces, he identified the plant world as an environment with great potential in both senses. Here, he can manifest himself as a researcher who looks carefully through the lens of a microscope, but also as an architect who rejoices in the vicinity of great edifices.

The painter Marcel Lupșe is somewhat similar to the famous naturalist Carl Linnaeus who, whenever he discovered a plant he had never seen before, expressed his amazement and gratitude that he had been given the opportunity to see once again the footsteps of the Creator in the garden of the world...

The coherence with which the explanatory syncopations integrate into the images - since we know where, when, and under what circumstances they were painted - leads me to affirm the allegorical rationale of Marcel Lupșe's gardens, in a key à natura mirabilis, à et in Arcadia ego, and of the place of revelation (the garden, the mountain).

They were around for a long period, respectfully acknowledged in the Middle Ages, brought into ancient monastic gardens, in carefully reserved sections, where the speech of the centuries gave them a name that has remained engraved, in keeping with their beneficial modesty: simples, having their origin, abbreviated, in simple medicine, proclaiming a modest efficiency without any other addition. Our current epoque, not only on a single meridian, rediscovers their legitimacy, dedicates exhibitions to them, which are in fact true rituals of rehabilitation.

GOLDENRODS - oil / canvas, 80 x 60 cm, 2025

As a child, I witnessed the ritual of throwing wreaths woven from goldenrods onto the roofs by girls dreaming of marriage. I saw the wheat wreath woven and hung from the beam of my grandparents' house to guard the year until the next harvest. I tied and dried bouquets of marjoram, basil, and izma on the porch or on the veranda. I`ve heard the story so many times and I too dreamed of holding the herb of the beasts in my palm... The rest is... painting.

Indirectly, the painter attempts to restore the gaze. It is also a plea for turning our face towards nature, to the relationship that man once had with it, to the times when man obediently listened to the voice and whisper of the universe, its dynamics and magic, when reason submitted to feeling, and beauty was not so much a lofty philosophical concept, as it was a formative and natural part of everyday existence.
