In detail lies the power to unveil the intricate essence of things and in it looms the trap of triviality overshadowing the whole. It is this duality of meaning and potential that Horia Roșca is nevertheless in tune with the dilemmas of the day.
In this retrospective exhibition, curator Marinela Mantescu-lsac included an array of works that allow the guest to get aquainted with the broad repertoire of Roșca's topics and modes of plastic expression while also hinting at sources of inspiration and the predecessors that influence his style and preoccupations.
Personal elements blend with societal ones: scenes from his workshop center on the emblematic windows as portals between inner and outer spaces, between one's mind and the melange of stimuli and ideas flowing toward the self. In a handful of itirations of the "Forest Edge", he examines the meeting point between man-made and natural landscapes, with improbable extensions of one into the other, as if to challenge the "normal", predrawn boundaries of perception.
The occasional and intentional lack of detail, particularly in self-portraits and characters can be construed as a reminder that what is visible to the eye is incomplete. Many of the faces have only one side sketched leaving the other obscured, devoid of sensory channels and other recognizable features.
The ensemble of -isms that find their echoes in Horia Roșca's work (cubism, expressionism, surrealism, constructivism, fauvism) serve as alternate lenses to view the world and allow detail to become the key for opening layered drawers of reality, fantasy and conscience.
Elevations in pitch and silencing of detail are fundamental tools in understanding the individual and the surroundings but also in creating harmonies among communities and cultures. As a Romanian born, German resident, Roșca experienced first hand this transition from one set of norms to another.
It is not by chance that the current exhibition has its vernissage in correlation with the second edition of "Art & Business: WIN - WIN", an event supported by seven bilateral chambers of commerce (ASEMER, BEROCC, BCCBR, CBEX, NRCC, CCIPR, HRCC) and PRIA Events. Our common objective is to promote cross-cultural relations that enrich us as individuals and as a cosmopolitan community. We bring together people with noble intellect and high professional aspitations in order to stimulate the creation, preservation and purchase of art that passes the test of time and speaks relevance beyons its place of origin.
