RETROSPECTIVE

WIN Gallery invites you  to a regal "Retrospective" by Marinela Mantescu-lsac, celebrating 70 years of a well thought, well lived and well portrayed life in the spirit and service of the arts.

Between the alert rhythm of life and the mundane tasks that occupy the largest portion of the day, art often gets relegated by most people to a secondary set of priorities: desirable but dispensable. The irony is that, looking back, the memories that most enlighten the mind and soothe the soul are those connected with making and seeking beauty. An earlier and greater awareness of it would perhaps change the choices that we make but as Soren Kierkegaard famously said: "Life can only be understood backwards but it must be lived forwards".

Ms. Marinela Măntescu-lsac dedicated her entire life to one goal: becoming an artist not only by mastering the technique of painting but by exploring the depths of human emotion and understanding theconstant chess game between the transient and the unchangeable. The result is an extraordinary collection of works that encompasses a variety of themes, from still lifes, to portraits and complex compositions that allude to the duality of the individual, between mask and character. In each of them there is the evanescence, the aura, the immortalization of the fleeting moment.

The landscapes have a quasi-sensory quality to them, a vibrancy and musicality dictated both by color and the bold brushstroke. In her marines, for instance, the wind, the waves, the coastal vegetation can almost be heard and touched. The sensation is that you are not only seeing but breathing in the spirit of that time and place.

The heroes of her works are highly elaborate, enigmatic, with expressions that fuse joy with nostalgia, the appearance with the profound. Approaching classical themes like the circus or other venues of public entertainment, she exposes the timeless dichotomy between what people show and what they hide - by means of role, mask, convention or simply conniving impulses. Extrapolating the scene, it is the perpetual performance of humanity.

Having celebrated her 70th birthday this year (2024), Ms. Marinela Mantescu-lsac is bestowing upon WIN Gallery the honor to display works made throughout her career. Her prestige has long expanded beyond the borders of Romania and she is present in many private and public collections across the world, including: the United States, Canada, Switzerland, France, Germany, Japan, Israel, the Netherlands and many others.

For WIN Gallery, it is a particularly festive occasion because Ms. Mantescu-lsachas been a driving force, an inspiration, a mentor and the curator of many exhibitions since our debut. A "Retrospective" is by definition a hint at things past but this collection is especially, purposefully about the future. It is a perspective on art as practice and passion, a contemplation on the ways in which it elevates each of us to a superior level of thinking and acting. Art holds immense, transformative potential but it is our hands, our eyes and our minds that hold the power to unleash it.

In the final analysis, Marinela Măntescu's painting represents a state of mind arising from the relation of the self to this spiritual-aesthetic proposal, to this visual philosophy, clearly and emphatically stated, constructed in ways that makes it lyrical and exuberant.

Her scenes must be taken in fully, in their entirety and you would nevertheless get the impression that they are still being shaped, that the painting process is intensely and permanently active.

When analyzing Marinela Măntescu's painting, at first glance, everything seems familiar, logical and recognizable within the limits of our visual experience. However, as the second moment of perception comes along, the known world is erased, entering a new existence, a symbolic one, tumultuous and full of signs, signals, allusions, with everything resembling a challenge to the spirit.

Virgil Mocanu, ,,Rhythm and Color", excerpt from "Măntescu, Postelnicu Art Collection", Coresi. 2019. p. 10

Marinela Mantescu's painting is a solar-floral storm in which the brushstrokes float as if directed by a magic wand.

Another favorite compositional scheme is that of lateral wings (especially in the case of windows), meant to distill the expressive value of the near - far relationship in a fertile dialog of transparency and opacity filtering light in dark vertical or horizontal lines, suggesting an anchoring; certainly, these details can be observed in the spectacle of the whole, which manifests the irrepressible temptation of the abstraction.

Doina Păuleanu, ,,Marinela Măntescu - An Eternal Vibration", excerpt from "Măntescu, Postelnicu Art Collection", Coresi, 2019, p. 14

Whether we are referring to landscapes, still lites or portraits, the treatment of major components and details remains invariably homogeneous and purely chromatic, in the sense that objects, backgrounds and faces do not simply indicate physical landmarks with unambiguous identity, but rather color tones or sets of shadesorganically participate in the configuration of the composition, in the unique, perennial and unchanging purpose of the painter's entire artistic pursuit.

Corneliu Ostahie, ,,The Art of Substituting Beauty", excerpt from "Măntescu, Postelnicu Art Collection", Coresi, 2019, p. 11

NIGHTTIME, acrilyc / canvas, 60x60 cm, 2023

The product of this sophisticated way of perceiving and hypostatizing what is expressible as such, using plastic language, is reflected in Marinela Măntescu's painting - a chromatic poem continuously recited, one that does not lack interrogative or vaguely theatrical episodes meant to make it rhyme compositionally with both the reality of life and that of dreams.

It is as if each brush stroke outlining the objects is longing to leave the concrete form (otherwise barely suggested) and turn into a mere trace, a stain, an accent, a contrast or a vibration.

STILL LIFE WITH CHRYSANTEMUMS AND QUINCE, oil / canvas, 80x80 cm, 2009

The motivation of this incessant metamorphosis, able to order things with spontaneous grace and brighten the course, removing roughness of all kinds, is neither aesthetically oriented (the author does not want to beautify the surrounding reality), nor scientific (Marinela Măntescu does not propose laws or norms) or sapiential (it does not contain moral or moralizing sentences); The artist simply enjoys what she sees; in depicting timepieces, the author understands how to restore what she sees in original form and communicate, urbi et orbi, her oneiric certainty: I paint, therefore I am.

Doina Păuleanu, ,,Marinela Măntescu - An Eternal Vibration", excerpt from "Măntescu, Postelnicu Art Collection", Coresi, 2019, p. 14

It is as if the surface of the canvas does not accommodate enough and you part from each work with the certainty that the author would have wanted (and could have easily done so, given her technical virtuosity) to continue it, naturally extending the chromatic chords (always in the same major key) and the rhythms of the same inner dynamics.

Encompassing all genres: still life, landscape, interior, portrait, nude, Marinela Măntescu's paintings belonging to this important collection, as well as her entire creation, reveal the lyrical approach of a spirit attached to both tradition and the modernist adventure, a particular way of representing the world metaphorically, a reality decanted and absorbed by its own sensibility.

Discovering her own image, like Narcissus, the painting is a self-revelation, a mirroring of things in which the motif does not dissolve into a pattern, not even an ideal one, but suggests the existential complexity assimilated to the spiritual complexity of the human being.
