UNREAL REALITY

With Valentin Tănase's personal exhibition, WIN Gallery invites you to step into the “Unreal reality” of the artist and muse about your own.

Is there only one reality? Is it perishable or enduring? Is it collective or deeply personal? There are many tragedies and anecdotes around the things we – humanity – used to think were laws of nature, of the universe, of God(s). For a while, it was a “fact” that the Earth sat at the center of the solar system. It was as obvious as the succession of day and night, as logical as one plus one equals two. To affirm this today is sure to place you among the lunatics. A couple hundred years ago, to deny it would have, ironically, earned you the same distinction. Yet, there were rebels like Nicolaus Copernicus, Galileo Galilei and Giordano Bruno  -  occasionally  subversive  of  institutions  but  primarily  of  ignorance.

Observation and science do matter; they are transformative and empowering. However, there is always something else that precedes them, that fuels them through: it is the unrivaled courage of imagination. There is a spark, a novel way of seeing that allows us to challenge the status quo, and truth as we learned it. It is in this common, fertile ground of curiosity, creativity and fantasy that science and art meet. They are twin methods of exploring the same thing: our way towards progress, pleasure and profit.

The period we are traversing, particularly with the rise of artificial intelligence and emphasis on science obliges us to reconsider the role of art and the position of the artist. We are more than archives of functionalities  and  data.  We  are  florilegiums  of  emotions,  beliefs  and  dreams.

The artist's pursuit is as complicated as it is unique and thus irreplaceable: to unite “reality” - the tangible, the conventional - with the “unreality” of this sentimental and subconscious florilegium.

Exploring this subject with well-known Romanian artist Valentin Tănase has been nothing short of a golden opportunity. His passion for history, literature and mythology reflects in generous    symbolism, allegories and rich cultural references. This classical direction is very well complemented by his mastery of graphics and illustration, making him versatile, modern and fresh. This is evident in the diversity of his creation: from comic strips to book illustrations, monumental paintings, murals and mosaics. His signature is present in some of Romania's most respected institutions, including: the   Ministry  of  Defense,  the  National  Military  Museum,  the  CEC  Palace,  etc.

The selection of works, made by Marinela Măntescu-Isac, the curator of the exhibition, allows the art lover and collector to contemplate Valentin Tănase's intellectual prowess alongside his   remarkable technique and originality in reframing old questions into contemporary context. He succeeds in being sober without being stiff, elegant without being predictable or dull, universal without  leaving  out  the  Romanian  spirit.

WIN Gallery remains dedicated to the purpose of bringing forth inspiring people and ideas and above all, of encouraging questions that enable us to broaden our perspective not only by training the eye, but also the mind and the soul. Valentin Tanase's exhibition comes at a moment when much of our society is struggling to define reality, to separate authenticity from falsehood, value from pseudo-worth. It is     our hope that you will enjoy this incursion into the unreal reality of the artist and muse about your own.

Artist statement

I have always been a figurative, realistic visual artist, part of a world where everything is very clear, transparent, integrated into a real, truthful universe. But I have often faced situations where I had to create paintings that complied with certain ideological canons. It was a kind of creative constraint. I managed to get through these trials by respecting and loving the process, but also the creation itself. As for the military universe in which I carried out my activity, it forces you to have a certain rigor, a certain discipline of thought, of programs, of work. The military uniform gives you a certain dignity and seriousness in how you express yourself and how you present yourself to others in public, but it did not constrain me, nor limit my creativity.

HOPE - oil / canvas, 72 x 92 cm, 2023

The proportions in Valentin Tănase's art are all golden, all of them, not just those of the nudes, as some are tempted to believe. His work is structured compositionally according to the most precise and beautiful coordinates, it is that harmony of intrinsic nature, which an artist must see through the originality of his destiny.

Marius Tița, "Valentin Tănase - a monograph", edited by Lucian C. Oancea, excerpt from subchapter 6, "Actors in a painting by Valentin Tănase", Irizor Publishing House, Onești, 2024, p. 62

In front of the easel, in that special moment of creation, the artist brings the magic of his art, the talent and experience of years of hard work, careful observation and understanding of people, without which you cannot paint even a model's finger, with sincerity and dedication, with knowledge and culture, with the discoveries of the eternal student and with a wise meticulousness of documentation, of searching for historical evidence.

GENESIS - THE CREATION OF EVE - oil / canvas, 70 x 100 cm, 2015

Valentin Tănase's painting is marked by time, "which flees without returning"; behind this statement lie love, dreams, the sea, and a supernatural entity, "the Demiurge" which is superimposed on the artist's spirit and onto his thinking.

Ana Amelia Dincă, “Tribuna” magazine, no. 485, November 16 - 30, 2022 edition, excerpt from the article “On Perfection”, p. 34

His painting, his entire work, is of rare beauty in its figurative interpretation. It`s an uplifting allegorical realism, expressive and vibrant.

STILL LIFE WITH CHRYSANTEMUMS AND QUINCE, oil / canvas, 80x80 cm, 2009

The motivation of this incessant metamorphosis, able to order things with spontaneous grace and brighten the course, removing roughness of all kinds, is neither aesthetically oriented (the author does not want to beautify the surrounding reality), nor scientific (Marinela Măntescu does not propose laws or norms) or sapiential (it does not contain moral or moralizing sentences); The artist simply enjoys what she sees; in depicting timepieces, the author understands how to restore what she sees in original form and communicate, urbi et orbi, her oneiric certainty: I paint, therefore I am.

Doina Păuleanu, ,,Marinela Măntescu - An Eternal Vibration", excerpt from "Măntescu, Postelnicu Art Collection", Coresi, 2019, p. 14

It is as if the surface of the canvas does not accommodate enough and you part from each work with the certainty that the author would have wanted (and could have easily done so, given her technical virtuosity) to continue it, naturally extending the chromatic chords (always in the same major key) and the rhythms of the same inner dynamics.

Encompassing all genres: still life, landscape, interior, portrait, nude, Marinela Măntescu's paintings belonging to this important collection, as well as her entire creation, reveal the lyrical approach of a spirit attached to both tradition and the modernist adventure, a particular way of representing the world metaphorically, a reality decanted and absorbed by its own sensibility.

Discovering her own image, like Narcissus, the painting is a self-revelation, a mirroring of things in which the motif does not dissolve into a pattern, not even an ideal one, but suggests the existential complexity assimilated to the spiritual complexity of the human being.

The energy gathered (according to the laws of nature) in each segment of space recently investigated by Marinela Mantescu, but also in each object situated, intentionally and not by chance, in the given scenario is captured, analyzed, transformed, undone and remade by Marinela Măntescu following subjective paths.
