CONVENTION AND REBELLION

A Play in Four Acts

SORIN OTÎNJAC - THE AGE OF INNOCENCE, oil/cardboard, 53x80 cm, 2017

Prologue: “Make the world a better place”. This is the motto that every generation finds intact and equally irresistible. We expect ourselves to improve upon what came before us, trusting that we have both the means and the imagination to do so. This is the allure of progress. But how do we adjust solidified beliefs, dusty hierarchies, habit itself?

Act I: “Disrupt, revolutionize, shed the old”. To make space for the new, some things must inevitably change. The previously established order gets challenged and overturned. After all, many advances in science and in art have begun precisely this way: with a refusal to accept what was once considered self-evident. Questioning, contesting or even dismantling the status quo, however, is not the end. To dismantle an existing structure is not the same as building a new one.

Act II: “The day after toppling the old”. This is the crescendo, the most intriguing question perhaps, the one most often left unspoken. What remains? What is worth preserving? Who will embrace what emerges? As much as we are bewitched by what can be, we are responsible for how it comes to be. Not for isolated pieces of reality or dreams but for an entire system that is viable. The challenge is not simply to envision a different world, but to understand how it can be inhabited, sustained and allowed to flourish.

Act III: “New foundations take a season, not a day”. Since there are no schools of transformation, is it up to us to figure out how to prepare for it, how to lead it and how to set it in motion. Art is a fine laboratory for testing boundaries. A space for investigating alternatives, interpretations and reactions. It is introspection and it is debate, the meeting point of individual and collective memory. At the intersection between aesthetics, symbolism, history and emotion, it reveals dimensions of experience that resist dry, purely rational interpretations.

Act IV: “The same key that locks, unlocks”. We are all traders in thoughts, things and feelings. Especially of feelings. Love and hate, fear and hope shape our perception. Sometimes they distort it. On other occasions, they bring it into focus. It is this alternation that moves the balance of give and get. Our lives unfold in overlapping economies of affect, fact and artifact. To navigate them, we need shared rules, codes of behavior and channels of communication. Understanding, trust and acceptance must go hand in hand. In other words, our frameworks require convention and compromise - the heroes and the villains of any relationship.

Epilogue: At WIN Gallery, we treasure art and people who enchant and provoke, honor the past and experiment with the future, and deconstruct without forgetting to recreate meaning. All with a healthy dose of modesty.
